The Underneath

Appelt, K. (2010).  The Underneath. New York, NY:  Atheneum.
This is a story of a cat, a dog, and a snake.  Three different stories brought together buy a kitten.  There are ties to abuse, neglect, running away, and hiding out.  There are magical things happening.  Like the shape shifting snake that lived in a jar for a hundred years.  There is a sense of forgiveness and defining the meaning of love whether it is your own kid or not.  It started off with a lot of repeating of phrases, which I didn’t like, but I changed my mind.  I think the magic is what turned me on the most, and the love.
