The Chocolate War

Cormier, R. (1974).  The Chocolate War.  New York, NY:  Dell Laurel-Leaf.
I the love the fight of the lone person against the mob rule.  In this story, Archie demonstrates how he is self-interest driven, intelligent and all powerful.  Through his intelligence he finds a way to turn the whole school against Jerry (the lone person).  Artie had verbal agreements with Brother Leon to help each other; I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine.  Jerry and everyone else will sell chocolate.  They helped each other and covered for each other.  They put aside everyone else’s needs for their own interests.  Archie did many of these things for power.  The fight was very interesting.  Bye a strip of paper to dictate how the fight will go.  Before the fight, he had to pull out two marbles, the first was easy, but on the second, he palmed it and just showed it because he was Archie, all powerful.  I was pleasantly surprised when Jerry (the one guy fighting the mob), gets beat.  The bad guy wins!  How cool is that.
