Engle, M. (2008). The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba’s Struggle for Freedom. New York, NY: Henry Holt and Company.
This is a book of poems written by different people connected to each other. They talk about the struggles of the Cubans dealing with slavery and war. The poems are written in the point of views from different people: the slave, the slave hunter, the freed slave, the girl losing her mother and becoming an orphan. Each poem relates to the other and each person feels and thinks about what is going on.
