Garden, N. (1982). Annie on My Mind. New York, NY: Farrar, Straus, Giroux.
This is a story about two 17 year old girls (Eliza and Annie), who become friends, and fall in love. Well, Eliza falls in love with Annie, and shows how the world is viewed as holding different opinions, rights and values. The two girls discover that they have feelings for each other and hide it from everyone else. While house sitting, they finally have a chance to be very intimate. Eliza discovers that her teachers are lesbians as well. The problem was that they get caught. After going in front of the school committee, Eliza is left alone, and her teachers were fired. Sally and other student at her school, told the committee that these teachers were an influence to Eliza which lead to their removal. In the end, Eliza calls Annie and demonstrates that they will continue to see each other, they are in love, despite the values and opinions of others. I liked how even though the two female teachers were fired because of Eliza and Annie being caught in their house, they were very supportive.
