The Underneath

Appelt, K. (2010).  The Underneath. New York, NY:  Atheneum.
This is a story of a cat, a dog, and a snake.  Three different stories brought together buy a kitten.  There are ties to abuse, neglect, running away, and hiding out.  There are magical things happening.  Like the shape shifting snake that lived in a jar for a hundred years.  There is a sense of forgiveness and defining the meaning of love whether it is your own kid or not.  It started off with a lot of repeating of phrases, which I didn’t like, but I changed my mind.  I think the magic is what turned me on the most, and the love.

Lego Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary

Beecroft, S. (2009).  LEGO Star Wars:   The Visual Dictionary.  New York, NY:  DK Publishing.
This is an awesome book.  It takes me back to not only when I was a kid, but more importantly it reminds me of the times I would build these LEGO’s with my kids.  You can never go wrong with LEGO’s.  this dictionary points out little details on these LEGO’s like the “Force-attuned pilot headset.”  It tells you everything good guys and bad.  My kids keep finding new things every time they look at it.

The Graveyard Book

Gaimen, D.  (2008).  The Graveyard Book.  New York, NY:  HarperCollins Children’s Books.
This was an interesting story of a baby, “Bod” whose family was murder in the begging of the book.  Anyway, Bod escapes from his crib and being killed and runs off to hide in a graveyard where he is raised by the ghost there.  Bod grows up learning about the natural and supernatural alike.  He learns about his limitation, and what he can do, and works on the skill he needs to survive in the world.  He knows more about being dead than being human.  The people who killed his family are still out there trying to find him.  He eventually beats the Jacks (murderer) and leaves the graveyard to pursue his life as a human being.

Junie B. Jones Has a Peep in Her Pocket

Park, B. (2000).  Junie B. Jones Has a Peep in Her Pocket.  New York, NY:  A Stepping Stone Book.
I like how the author wrote in words that when read, sound like a kindergartener saying it.  I like how Junie B. is afraid of horses because of a TV show, then because of mom, roosters.  Then she was okay with roosters to, but was afraid of goats like the farmer.  She was really concerned about her field trip to a farm.  But the farmer was nice enough to let her be in charge of the children and she ended up really enjoying the farm.

Tornado

Byars, B. (1996).  Tornado.  New York, NY:  HarperCollins Children’s Books.
This was such a cute book. Pete was nice enough to tell stories of his dog, Tornado, while waiting for a tornado to pass.  The stories kept the kid’s minds off the tornado going on outside their cellar doors.  It also kept their minds off the fact that their dad was out there somewhere; he wasn’t close enough to make it in the cellar.  This reminds me of pass times I have spent comforting my kids through hurricanes and keeping their minds off what was going on outside.

Wait Till Helen Comes

Hahn, M. (1986).  Wait Till Helen Comes.  New York, NY:  Clarion Books.
There is a ghost named Helen, and a meanish girl named Heather.  The ghost helps heather, but because Heather is mean, she askes the ghost to do mean things, like trashing the house.  The house ends up burning down and the ghost gets to leave by becoming an angel, and Heather becomes a decent person.  I like the whole ghost thin and mostly the change of a person especially when changing to a better one.

Help Me, Mr. Mutt! Expert Answers for Dogs with People Problems

Stevens, J. & Stevens, S.  (2008).  Help Me, Mr. Mutt! Expert Answers for Dogs with People
Problems. New York NY:  Harcourt, Inc.
This is a very cute book about how dogs need help when dealing with humans.  I love the way “Mr. Mutt” gives advice.  I swear my dogs must write and get responses from this dog, once a week.  There is always something.

Math Curse

Smith, L. & Scieszka, J. (1995).  Math Curse.  New York, NY:  Viking.
What a great way to show that math is everywhere.  This poor kid has a crazy math day where everything is math to him.  When he finally breaks the “curse” given to him by his math teacher, he realizes that the science teacher will do the same.

Verdi

Cannon, J. (1997).  Verdi.  New York, NY:  Harcourt Brace & Company.
Verdi was a baby python who is wondering why there was a rush to grow up and turn green.  Oh, I love the way “Verdi” sounds like Verde (green in Spanish).    Verdi is trying not to turn green but of course, it starts to happen.  He tries to fight it and ends up getting hurt.  He turns big and green, but he is okay with it.  When two yellow snakes go to him he plays with the snakes because he was happy with who he was.  I loved the facts at the end of the book about snakes.

Cook-A-Doodle-Doo

Crummel, S. & Stevens, J. (1999).  Cook-A-Doodle-Doo.  Orlando, FL:  Harcourt Brace & Company.
I loved the reference to the Little Red Hen.  She was the rooster’s great grandma.  Well the rooster is tired of eating corn and decides to look for grandma’s recipe book.  Not surprising, the dog, cat, and duck don’t want to help, but he does get some help from a turtle, iguana, and a pot bellied pig.  Surprisingly enough, there were many recipes and they made a strawberry short cake.  Pig ate it after it was dropped to the ground, so they made more and shared it with everyone.  I loved the little helpful facts about cooking that were given on each page.

The Golden Mare, The Firebird, and the Magic Ring

Sanderson, R. (2001).  The Golden Mare, The Firebird, and the Magic Ring. New York, NY:  Little,
           Brown and company.

This was a cute fairy tale.  Alexi, the hunter finds adventure with a magical horse, and a jelous Tsar.  With the help of the horse, he captures the firebird, and brings the Tsar a fine maiden to marry.  She tricks him and maries Alexi turning the Tsar into a baby.  They raise the baby as their own, the firebird is released as is the horse, who always helped him as he became the new Tsar.

Sparrow Girl

Pennypacker, S. (2009).  Sparrow Girl.  New York, NY:  Disney-Hyperion Books.
This is a nice story about a young girl named Ming-Li and how she saved the sparrows and in the end, the farms.  The town’s people spend three days scaring the sparrows to death.  The little girl fells bad for the sparrows and saves 7.  The farmers meet and all say that their crops are going to be gone because of bugs and insects.  Ming-Li tells them that the birds were never the enemy because they ate these insects.  She shows them the seven birds, and she is now called sparrow girl and is considered a farmer by her father.   I liked how they connected the things together, they are all connected to each other, and everything has its purpose.
